The driving theory test in Geneva: what you need to know

The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions over 45 minutes, covering right of way rules, road signs, and photo-based scenarios. Each wrong or unanswered question deducts 1 point. The fail threshold is -15 points.

Results are given immediately at the end of the test. The certificate is issued within 2 to 3 days.

Prerequisites for registration

Before registering for the theory test at the OCV in Geneva, you must have the following 3 documents:

  • First aid course certificate (mandatory first aid training)
  • Eye test carried out by an optician approved by the Geneva OCV
  • Learner’s licence application form, completed and signed

These documents must be submitted directly to the Geneva OCV before choosing your exam date.

Is the theory course compulsory to sit the theory test in Geneva?

No, the theory course is not compulsory. You can prepare independently using the official app. However, it is strongly recommended if you want to go in well-prepared, ask your questions directly, and avoid common mistakes on exam day.

The theory test takes place at the Geneva OCV (Office cantonal des véhicules), located at Route de Veyrier 86, 1227 Carouge. You register directly with the OCV after obtaining your learner’s licence.

The theory test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. Each wrong or unanswered question deducts 1 point. The fail threshold is -15 points. The exam covers road signs, right of way rules, and photo-based driving scenarios.

If you fail, you must wait at least 7 days before resitting the exam. There is no limit on the number of attempts. We strongly recommend booking a theory course session at NonStop Drive before your next attempt to identify and address your weak areas.

The learner’s licence is valid for 24 months. It is extended by 12 months each time you complete a mandatory training step (first aid course or motorcycle basic training). If it expires before you sit your practical test, you must start the entire process from scratch.
