What is the first aid course in Geneva?

Before taking any other step towards your driving licence, Swiss law requires you to complete a 10-hour first aid training course. This course is the very first mandatory step to obtain your driving licence in Geneva, whether for a car licence (category B), motorcycle licence (category A) or scooter licence (category AM).

In French-speaking Switzerland, this course is commonly referred to as the “cours samaritain”. It is not affiliated with the Samaritan movement, but is an FEDRO-approved training course (Federal Roads Office), recognised in all Swiss cantons. The certificate issued on completion is valid for 6 years.

Good to know: if you already hold an A or B licence, this course is not required.

How does the first aid training in Geneva work?

The first aid course is split into two complementary parts – theory and practice – to give you full mastery of life-saving techniques.

Theory session

The first part covers the core principles of first aid: how to respond to an emergency, the right reflexes to adopt, which numbers to call, and how to pass on information to the professional emergency services.

Hands-on practice with manikins

The second part puts theory into practice using connected training manikins. You practise chest compressions, using a defibrillator (AED), placing casualties in the recovery position, and managing severe bleeding through realistic simulated scenarios.
